I want my city to care when people show up to voice their opinions at Albany Council meetings and I'm not sure those who come to Council meetings feel met or see any way to affect the decisions that are made. I'm running for Albany City Council because I believe local government should include a diversity of voices and opinions instead of those of the same people again and again. Pluralism requires openness and change. **Why are you qualified?** I have years of experience living and working in cooperative housing as a UC Berkeley student. I learned different ways to govern and create consensus. I have decades of experience in tech and have some understanding of critical issues including network, IoT, and grid security. Recent work with AI tools helps me to understand how we might be able to more safely use AI and the issues ahead. With a background in traditional photography, filmmaking and kiln-formed glass, I understand the importance of the arts and in representing voices and bodies typically underrepresented. **What sets you apart from other candidates?** I am a woman. But two women do sit on the Council now. I can be differentiated from other candidates based on my lack of support for current ballot measures that attempt to solve budget problems by tax increase. Two candidates — an incumbent and a former Council member--appear to support these. I am interested in housing affordability extending to the creation of land trusts, price restrictions and right-of-first-refusal options. Unlike most or perhaps all candidates, I am running for office because of the profoundly bad experience I have had as the owner of a Prop 13 home in Albany. **How and when did you end up in Albany?** My family moved here when I was quite young. My father was a gardener and my mother a California teacher her entire career. My parents hoped to live in UC Berkeley married students' housing at the Albany Village. We ended up, however, renting a series of houses in Albany before my parents purchased a home in the Albany flatlands. This is the home I now own. I attended Albany schools and studied history at UC Berkeley. For decades I lived in Seattle, coming back to Albany during the pandemic. **What are the three biggest challenges for Albany in the next five years?** - Structural deficit. Albany delivers services on par with cities of greater revenue. Pension costs and the closure of Golden Gate Fields have increased pressure to raise revenues. - Housing. Housing is increasingly unaffordable because we treat housing as a speculative market. The Statewide Housing Plan demands we do everything we can to keep residents in their homes. This adds to the tension of a city budget that relies on residential property taxes. - Climate action. New technology impacts others besides the buyer. Compatibility issues can crop up when new technology is installed. **How would you begin to address them?** - I will initiate town hall events on the budget, on services, and on the possibilities for cooperation with neighboring cities. After years of turmoil on the national level, we must ensure local democratic process. The best way to do this is through inclusion. - I will promote affordable housing, land trusts and real estate co-ops. I will propose the extension of right-of-first-refusal options and resale restrictions where possible. I will strive to protect home owners and tenants from abusive practices intended to force them from their homes. - I will create help to create resources on electrification and upgrade. I will propose codes to help ensure that new tech does not adversely affect the house next door. These can offer on-demand transportation to Albany residents with discounts to disabled and low-income groups. Some autonomous shuttles are already in the regulatory process. **How will you be accessible to constituents?** By email to the city website and to my candidate website. I will also make myself available during regular office hours to be posted to my candidate website. **How much money do you expect to spend on your campaign?** Less than $2,000 **A final thought?** Despite the rough time I continue to have with speculation in my Albany neighborhood, I believe good government is benevolent. I believe we should be the change we want to see in the world. I believe in freedom of choice. A favorite poem of mine is Rumi's "The Guest House." The poem begins "This being human is a guest house. Every morning a new arrival."
