## Rick Moranis’ deadly green thumb

The Cerrito Classic series continues with 1986's *Little Shop of Horrors*, the film based on the 1982 off-Broadway musical adapted from Roger Corman’s 1960 low-budget farce. Guided by the sure hand of director Frank Oz, a graduate of Oakland Tech, Rick Moranis and Ellen Greene hilariously contend with the voracious Audrey II, voiced by the imperious baritone of the Four Tops' Levi Stubbs. From the Motown-esque chorus of Tisha Campbell, Tichina Arnold and Michelle Weeks to special appearances by Jim Belushi, John Candy, Christopher Guest and Bill Murray, the cast makes this cult film a hoot that rewards regular rewatching. **Thursday, Oct. 29, 6 p.m.** [**Rialto Cinemas Cerrito**](https://app.formovietickets.com/title?showTitle=LITTLE%20SHOP%20OF%20HORRORS&ref=albanyscanner.com) **(El Cerrito). $9**

## You’ll always have Paris with Baguette Quartette

Is there a word for feeling nostalgic about nostalgia? In the mid-1990s, when I was still learning my way around Berkeley, [Baguette Quartette](https://www.baguettequartette.org/?ref=albanyscanner.com) represented everything I hoped my life in the city would be. With a repertoire of rueful songs and sprightly instrumentals straight outta the 6th Arrondissement, the group provided an ideal soundtrack for my fantasy of grad school, with endless afternoons sipping coffee in cafés while musing about love affairs, politics and jazz. Founded and led by French button-accordionist and vocalist Odile Lavault, who spent years performing around Paris before moving to Berkeley, Baguette Quartette hasn’t played much since she stepped away from the combo in 2013, so this reunion is welcome indeed. Joined by veteran Oakland bassist Rich Trevor and the all-star Berkeley tandem of John Schott on acoustic guitar and violinist Rachel Durling, Baguette Quartette plays a delicious repertoire of *valses musettes*, tangos, pasos dobles, fox trots and vintage songs that kept Parisians entertained in the decades between the world wars. **Friday, Oct. 30, 8 p.m.** [**The Back Room**](https://events.humanitix.com/the-baguette-quartette?%5Fgl=1%2A1rvk462%2A%5Fgcl%5Fau%2AMzU3NjcxMDQwLjE3OTIxODI3NDA.%2A%5Fga%2ANDIyMTcwNTk4LjE3OTIxODI3NDA.%2A%5Fga%5FLHKW5FR9N6%2AczE3OTI4NjQ3MjAkbzMkZzAkdDE3OTI4NjQ3MjMkajU3JGwwJGgw&ref=albanyscanner.com) **(Berkeley). $25-$30**

## A quarter century of Celtic Dead

Wake the Dead. **Saundra Lewis*

[Wake the Dead](https://wakethedead.org/?ref=albanyscanner.com) was born with the brilliant and previously unexplored concept of interpreting the Grateful Dead songbook through a Celtic lens. But over the years the acoustic band has embraced the whole roiling Summer of Love rock revolution, with a particular focus on the San Francisco scene. Led by Albany's Danny Carnahan on vocals and octave mandolin, the group returns to the Freight for its 26th annual Halloween/Día de los Muertos celebration (and also plays [Pacific Grove on Nov. 1](https://www.facebook.com/events/st-marys-by-the-sea-episcopal-church/wake-the-dead-at-st-marys-by-the-sea%EF%B8%8F/1489040029716267/)). With Sylvia Herold on vocals and guitar, Paul Kotapish on vocals and mandolin, Kevin Carr on uilleann pipes and fiddle, Valerie Rose on vocals and fiddle, and the stellar rhythm section team of bassist Cindy Browne and percussionist Brian Rice, Wake the Dead reimagines familiar hits by the likes of Jefferson Airplane, Buffalo Springfield and the Youngbloods as jigs, reels and airs. **Saturday, Oct. 31, 8 p.m.** [**The Freight**](https://secure.thefreight.org/16079-wake-dead-261031/16089?ref=albanyscanner.com) **(Berkeley). $44-$49**

## Your friendly neighborhood Mutants

Some 15 years ago the Mission District club Amnesia spawned a strange electro-acoustic ensemble devoted to rearranging the molecules of 1980s pop songs, refracting melodic hooks into unexpected new shapes. Led by trumpeter Henry Hung, who doubles on electronic effects, the group known as the [Klaxon Mutant All-Stars](https://klaxonmutantallstars.bandcamp.com/album/the-gr8st-hits-volume-1?ref=albanyscanner.com) has waxed and waned over the years as musicians moved or started families. With several recent performances, the volatile ensemble is back in action with founding members Kasey Knudsen on alto saxophone and effects, Colin Hogan on keyboards and Eric Garland on drums. Jonathon Herrera is the latest bassist to round out the quintet, which has also honed a book of original tunes that zig and zag in unpredictable directions. For this Halloween concert, they're encouraging listeners to come costumed as a Klaxon Mutant, however that might be interpreted. **Saturday, Oct. 31, 8 p.m.** [**The Jazzschool**](https://concerts.jazzschool.org/halloween-with-henry-hungs-klaxon-mutant-all-stars/?ref=albanyscanner.com) **(Berkeley). $25**

## Sunday: Where to celebrate the dear departed

There is no shortage of opportunities to mark Día de los Muertos, the Mexican celebration that honors the dead, on Sunday, Nov. 1.

- From 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., the [Albany Library](https://aclibrary.bibliocommons.com/events/6acd1323e8cf1c005cb14aa3?ref=albanyscanner.com) offers face painting, a scavenger hunt, craft tables and an *ofrenda* (altar) to leave tributes to loved ones who have passed.
- In Berkeley from 5 to 9 p.m., [La Peña Cultural Center](https://www.eventbrite.com/e/dia-de-muertos-celebracion-ceremony-ofrenda-son-jarocho-food-tickets-2002848577009?aff=website&ref=albanyscanner.com) hosts the annual family-friendly celebration with an altar, bilingual children’s storytime, craft making and a son jarocho concert followed by a fandango jam session (bring your instruments). It’s an opportunity to honor and commune with ancestors while celebrating life. Prices vary.

[Joseph Dee Bradshaw](https://www.instagram.com/josephdeebradshaw/?ref=albanyscanner.com) is an Oakland-based steel-string guitarist who started making a name for himself on Portland, Oregon’s lively experimental music scene. Last year he released his first solo album, [*The Conversion*](https://josephdeebradshaw.bandcamp.com/album/the-conversion?ref=albanyscanner.com), a program of captivating originals that can feel both folky and stylistically untethered. He's been mixing it up lately on the East Bay scene and plays a solo set as part of Down Home Music’s ongoing free series. Bradshaw is also on a Nov. 5 multi-act bill at [Thee Stork Club](https://wl.eventim.us/event/non-plus-temps-pateka-murder-murder-joseph-dee-bradshow/704143?afflky=TheeStorkClub&ref=albanyscanner.com) in Oakland. **Sunday, Nov. 1, 3 p.m.** [**Down Home Music**](https://www.downhomemusic.com/upcoming-free-down-home-music-foundation-in-store-presentations/?ref=albanyscanner.com) **(El Cerrito). ## Feeling blue? Catch Azure McCall

A jazz singer of the old school, [Azure McCall](https://www.azuremccall.com/general-5?ref=albanyscanner.com) is steeped in the incisive phrasing and supple swing of Carmen McRae and Nancy Wilson. She toured with bass great Ray Brown and trumpet star Freddie Hubbard, among other jazz luminaries, and has performed internationally as a headliner. A jazz institution in Hawaii, where she's lived for more than four decades, she's been a regular presence on the Bay Area scene for years. She’s been holding down a regular gig at Romano's Macaroni Grill, where she’ll be joined by pianist Spencer Allen and guitarist Patrick Greene. **Wednesday, Nov. 4, 4:30-7:30 p.m.** [**Romano’s Macaroni Grill**](https://www.azuremccall.com/general-5?ref=albanyscanner.com) **(El Cerrito).
