Stories for an informed community

About Albany Scanner

Albany Scanner will cover all things Albany, California, and be the trusted, authoritative news source on politics, schools, business, public safety, housing, transportation — and more.

Once we meet our April 30 deadline to raise $50,000, we'll hire a reporter and begin to publish news stories.

The ultimate goal is regular news coverage (5-10 stories a week, to include freelance and community contributions) following an initial ramp-up period as we build our paid subscriber base and firm up the budget.

We’ll also produce a regular newsletter and allow comments to foster dialogue and debate.

Albany Scanner retains full editorial independence over all of our stories.

Albany Scanner is 100% reader-supported. That means we need your help to survive. Become a member now.

Who runs Albany Scanner?

Emilie Raguso (The Berkeley Scanner, Albany Patch, Berkeleyside) will oversee the site as publisher with help from a community advisory group, the Albany News Project, who will support Albany Scanner through fundraising and volunteerism.

After years without dedicated local news, Albany Scanner is launching in 2026 with veteran journalist Emilie Raguso and the Albany News Project, a ten-person volunteer group including former journalists, a former mayor, and community leaders. Here’s how they’re building a community-funded newsroom for Albany’s 15-minute city.

Albany Scanner places a premium on accuracy and objectivity in our reporting. If you see something that needs to be corrected, whether it's a typo, a mistake or an outright error, email us for a prompt review. We want to hear from you. Corrections will be noted at the foot of articles that require a fix.

If you have concerns about information in a story and believe something should be removed due to developments or extenuating circumstances, email Albany Scanner.

How to credit Albany Scanner

At Albany Scanner, we believe in crediting fellow news outlets for their scoops — and we hope they do the same.

If another news outlet surfaces a story we would otherwise not have known about, we will always credit and link to their site to make that clear.

Providing credit acknowledges on-the-ground reporting and provides important transparency for our readers.

These are also vital signals that help search engines determine which news sources are trusted and reliable. Questions? Email Albany Scanner.
