Golden Gate Fields town hall set for Monday in Albany
The public meeting comes as the planned $175 million park acquisition moves toward a key vote. Learn how to weigh in.
After months of news and speculation about the future of Golden Gate Fields, Albany residents are finally getting a chance to weigh in.
On Friday afternoon, the city announced a town hall Monday evening focused on plans to turn the 162-acre waterfront site into a public park.
Monday's session will include a presentation from the East Bay Regional Park District "regarding the transition of the Golden Gate Fields property into parkland/open space."
"This presentation will introduce the lead agency … and provide an overview of the long-term planning process," the city said in Friday's announcement.
Public comment will also be taken, with each speaker getting up to three minutes, depending on turnout.
The meeting will take place Monday at 5 p.m. at the Albany Community Center, 1249 Marin Ave., and be streamed online.
The $175 million deal is expected to close in 2027, transferring the property to the East Bay Regional Park District, and likely taking it off the tax rolls.
Some Albany community members have expressed concern about what that could mean for city services and schools.
According to Albany's analysis, the Golden Gate Fields property generates about $1.1 million in special revenues each year for the city and about $700,000 for the Albany Unified School District.
Park district set to vote on Golden Gate Fields Oct. 6
Monday night's meeting comes as the EBRPD board prepares to vote on the proposed purchase of Golden Gate Fields by Trust for Public Land (TPL).
"Upon acquisition, TPL will simultaneously convey the property to the Park
District for long-term ownership and stewardship," EBRPD has said.
The EBRPD board is expected to vote on the purchase Oct. 6, park district general manager Max Korten told the board at its Sept. 15 meeting.

At the Sept. 15 meeting, the board voted to enter into a $53 million grant agreement with the Wildlife Conservation Board and Trust for Public Land.
The money is part of a $125 million package put forward by the state legislature in late August.
Gov. Gavin Newsom signed the bill that included the allocation on Sept. 18.
In addition to the state money, EBRPD has already pledged $20 million for the Golden Gate Fields purchase in Measure WW funds, leaving a $30 million gap.
TPL has said it plans to raise the final piece through philanthropy.
"Next steps include securing additional philanthropic dollars to realize the full sale price and for Trust for Public Land to close on the property," Sen. Jesse Arreguín said in a Sept. 18 announcement. "Terms of the option agreement provide that the existing structures will be demolished and the site cleared as part of the sale."
One condition of the state funding is that the site "must principally be used for parks and open space uses."
But there has also been discussion about allowing some revenue-generating uses on the site alongside parkland.
